I just don’t like training

So, you don’t like training?

What do you actually mean when you say you don’t like training? What types of training are you referring to?

Can you define ‘training’ for me?

If I took 100 personal trainers from across the country and asked them to write out their last clients training session on a massive whiteboard, do you think each session would look the same?

What about if I asked one of them to write out the session they did with Kathy, the 45-year-old mother of 3 kids who they train at the local park, and then the session they did with Chris, the 30-year-old ex-pro football player who has a fully decked out home gym?

Would they look the same?

If I’m still speaking Spanish to you, think back to all the training you have done in the past…

Was every single session the same? Which one’s did you like? Which one’s did you hate?

Here’s just a short list of a few different styles of training and training modalities to jog your memory…

Boot Camps, Group Classes, Small Group, Couples, 1on1.

Yoga, Boxing, Rowing, Running, Cycling, Swimming, Weights.

Interval, Continuous, Circuit, Powerlifting, Bodybuilding, Olympic Lifting.

Barbells, Dumbbells, Kettlebells, Medicine Balls, Bands, Bodyweight.

High reps, Low reps. Long rests, Short rests.

You don’t actually hate training; you just hate the WAY you are training.

And it sounds like you probably need to try something different.

You know what, it might not even be the style of training that is the problem, environment matters.

Do you prefer training in a gym, or at a park? What about in the comfort of your own home?

Something about lifting heavy gets you going, music blaring, sweat dripping, love it.

Or do you prefer, slower, controlled, carefully constructed technical sessions in your backyard?

What about the trainer you are working with? Do you even have someone that can help give you advice?

Do you get along well? Does their personality match or compliment yours? It’s important to ask yourself these questions.

Do they ever ask you about what you like? Have you told them? Have your likes changed? Do they know?

If you don’t like what you are doing, it doesn’t matter if it makes sense or that you know it’s good for you, you aren’t going to do it.

And that’s not to say you need to enjoy every single session. But man, it sure does help when motivation is low.

At the end of the day, adherence is king. The best exercise is the one that is done, and done often.

You don’t hate training; you just hate what you’re doing right now. Go find something that you will really enjoy.
